I was stuck in the same place like you for months, I could not update from version 6.96. The trick is to use the “functions.php” from version 6.96 and it should work. Try it and let me know

Just open porto/functions.php and replace wrong encoded spaces. There are many wrongly encoded spaces in this file.

You may want to proceed with caution, after i installed, the entire website crashed, had to revert to version 6.10
